Aviane is a contraceptive pill that, when used correctly, is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It’s classed as a “combined pill,” which means it combines the hormones estrogen and progestin. (Mini pills, on the other hand, only have progestin.) Like all combined pills, Aviane must be taken daily, at the same time each day, for it to work at its best.
The hormones in birth control are versions of female hormones that the body produces naturally. Taking The Pill causes certain things to change in the body. For example, ovulation might not happen, meaning an egg will not be released. On the off-chance ovulation does occur, vaginal mucus also thickens which can block sperm from reaching an egg. Finally, conditions in the uterus will change while you take Aviane. This means eggs which do become fertilized will not be able to implant themselves and grow.

Aviane has 21 orange pills with hormones and seven hormone-free light green pills. You’ll take one orange pill daily for three weeks and then one light green pill daily for one week. After you’ve finished all 28 pills, you’ll start a new pack.
The light green pills in Aviane are inactive, meaning they don’t contain any hormones. You’ll take them during the week you’ll have your period. The reason hormone-free pills are included in your pack is so you can get into the routine of taking one pill every day, making it easier to remember.
Most birth control pills are highly effective when taken properly and no pills are missed, and Aviane is over 99% effective when taken perfectly. Aviane stays highly effective with typical use, which is when you might occasionally forget a pill, but it’s good practice to use back-up birth control methods like condoms for a week after your missed pill.
If you’re more than 12 hours late in taking one of your active pills, we recommend that you use a condom for the next week. Same goes for forgetting to take one or more pills. If you miss a pill during the inactive pill period, you don’t need to do anything (besides throw the missed pill away).
